The general investigation of estates is the revision and delimitation of land ownership in the Hetman region , carried out in 1729-1730 by the government of the Russian Empire conducted on the orders of the hetman Daniil Apostol with the aim of establishing the exact number of courtyards of the taxable population , and checking the legality of the rights to estates of Cossack foreman, gentry and the Orthodox clergy. All 10 left-bank regiments were covered. Description of the estates began in the summer of 1729 by specially appointed clerks who, moving from one locality to another, collected information from old-timers about the time the estates were founded and about their owners. The provision of false data could lead to severe penalties: selection of property, arrest and physical execution. At the same time, copies of letters of honor, generals of the hetmans, “letters” of the colonels, orders of the General Military Chancellery and the Little Russian Collegium were determined, which determined the rights and forms of ownership, clarified the boundaries of the lands of various individuals, monasteries, rural communities, magistrates, etc. Regimental books of the general investigation in January 1731 they were delivered to the hetman's residence - the town of Glukhov . According to the investigation, all the estates were divided into categories: rank, private, town hall and magistrate, monastery, free army, dubious.
