History

1924 Sevilla-Biltmore Hotel Tower Wing, 1931 Postcard.

The Sevilla Hotel opened on March 22, 1908 [1] . It was a four-story Neo-Moorish-style building designed by architect Arellano i Mendozaon, located on Trocadero Street, near Paseo del Prado , between Malecon and Havana Central Park . The Sevilla Hotel was acquired by John Macanty Bowman and Charles Francis Flynn in 1919 and renamed the Sevilla-Biltmore Hotel . In 1924, Bowman-Biltmore Hotels built the hotel’s huge 10-story tower wing with a rooftop ballroom designed by renowned New York architects from Schultze & Weaver .

In 1939, Sevilla-Biltmore was acquired by the Italian-Uruguayan gangster Amleto Battisti i Laura [1] . The casino organized at the hotel was closely connected with the Havana mafia network, being partially owned by the gangster Santo Traficante Jr. The casino was destroyed on January 1, 1959 after Cuban President Fulgencio Batista left the country at night when the rebel army of Fidel Castro approached Havana. Amleto Battisti i Laura took refuge in the embassy of Uruguay [2] [3] .

The hotel appears in Graham Green’s novel “ Our Man in Havana ” as the place where the main character was recruited by British intelligence .

Now the hotel belongs to the Cuban state Gran Caribe hotel group . The French hotel operator Accor took over the management in 1996 [4] , first under its Sofitel division as Hotel Sofitel Sevilla Havana [5] , and then under its other Mercure Hotels division as Hotel Mercure Sevilla Havane . Accor announced plans to renovate the hotel in 2017 and transfer it to its MGallery boutique [6] . However, in January 2019, Accor stopped managing the hotel.
