Biography
Dovlat Karanfilyan was born in 1892 in Cilicia in the city of Zeytun [4] . There, from childhood, watching mother and aunts weave carpets, mastered the craft of carpet weaving. Having received primary education in his native city, he moved to Aleppo, worked as a weaver and restorer of ancient fabrics and carpets. From 1919 to 1923 he was a designer and stylist of carpets at the Aleppo carpet factory. At the same time he studied at the School of Fine Arts and studied oriental miniatures [4] . Already then, Karanfilyan, past the carpet craft technique, was interested in the composition of the carpet pattern. He sought to overcome the old national traditions and move from a stylistic pattern to the most approximate image of a person. That is how he created a new genre of art - a portrait carpet. In 1924, Dovlat Karanfilyan moved to Soviet Armenia, to Yerevan, where, immediately after moving to a permanent place of residence, he organized his workshop. Working in the latter, Karanfilyan, together with his students, creates a series of portrait carpets of famous figures and national heroes [5] .
Dovlat Karanfilyan died in 1951.
Portrait Carpets
Carpets by Dovlat Karanfilyan stand out for their bright and cheerful colors. In his portrait carpets, there are technical drawings of a pattern requiring mathematical precision. To create such patterns, it was necessary to make a preliminary thorough marking on the cells of the ligature and a selection of the color of the pile. All this required a lot of work, knowledge and sophisticated artistic feeling. Such carpets were distinguished by the compositional integrity of the decorative frame with the portrait, as well as the maximum portrait similarity and harmonious combination of colors. The production of such a portrait carpet took a lot of time and effort. On average, it took up to 13 months to create a carpet. Almost all carpets created by Dovlat Karanfilyan are owned by various museums of the former USSR [5] .
