General Information
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the province of Alto Amazonas , 75 km southeast of the village of Lagunas and 158 km east-northeast of the city of Yurimaguas , in the Pakaya Samiria nature reserve. The earthquake hypocenter , according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), was at a depth of about 110 km [1] . The Peruvian earthquake station of the Institute of Geophysics of Peru indicates a depth of 135 km [2] . The earthquake lasted about two minutes and had a magnitude of 8.0 on a magnitude scale [3] [4] .
The quake has been the strongest in Peru since the 2007 quake . It was felt in many cities of Peru and Ecuador , as well as in Bogota ( Colombia ) and Caracas ( Venezuela ) [5] .
Damage and sacrifice
In Peru, two people died, in which one of them was killed with stones in his house [6] [7] [8] . According to a report by the COEN Civil Defense Control Center INDECI, 15 people were injured [9] . According to another source, more than 30 people were injured [10] .
About 200 buildings collapsed in Peru, including four schools and three hospitals. In Yurimaguas several houses and a church collapsed. Ecuador has also recorded damage to buildings. In some places, the power supply was interrupted [11] . Roads were also damaged and a road bridge between Yurimaguas and Tarapoto was destroyed. A state of emergency was declared in the Peruvian province of Alto Amazonas and in several areas of other provinces. [12]
