" Setting Me Up " is a song written by Mark Knopfler , first recorded and published by rock band Dire Straits on their self-titled debut album, but not released as a single. Ken Tucker in Rolling Stone described the song as an “unearthly thing,” combining humor and bitterness despite a typical intricate romantic theme [1] Tucker noted that the influence of the song is enhanced by the rumbling tone of Knopfler’s singing voice and country -style guitar solo. [1] Carly Darling at the Billboard Magazine praised the rockabilly style guitar game , but criticized the lyrics. [2]
The song appeared on Eric Clapton ’s double live album 1980, “ Just One Night ” with Albert Lee as a vocalist [3] Albert Lee also recorded his own version of the song for his album Hiding with Vocal Harmonies performed by Don Everly [4]
“Setting Me Up” is one of five songs for which Nopflera’s publisher did country demos without the approval of the songwriter, which led to a number of country-style cover versions of this and other songs. [5] American country band Highway 101 performed their the version of the song for their 1988 album Highway 101² and released it as the third single from this album in January 1989. The song reached # 7 on the Hot Country Singles billboard chart in April 1989. [6] Their version has shared lead vocals by Polett Carlson and bassist Curtis Stone. [7]
