Biography
Reliable information was not preserved about the origin and early years of John I. Based on onomastic data, it is assumed that he was from the Gallo-Roman family [1] .
In the medieval lists of the heads of the Diocese of Puatevina, the earliest of which was compiled in the 12th century, John I is named as the successor of Ennoald , the last evidence of which possibly dates back to 616. It is not known when and under what circumstances John I received the episcopal chair in Poitiers . It is only reliably established that in 625 he was already the head of the local diocese [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] .
John I is mentioned as a participant in two synods of prelates of the Frankish state : in 625 he was present at the church cathedral in Reims , and in 626 or 627 - at the church cathedral in the royal estate of (modern Clichy-la-Garenne ). Both synods were devoted to strengthening issues of church discipline and church law . In particular, participants in the Reims Cathedral adopted a decree categorically prohibiting Jews from compelling Christians dependent on them to accept Judaism [1] [2] [3] [4] [7] [8] .
Perhaps John I maintained friendly relations with Bishop Metz Arnulf [3] .
John I probably died shortly after the synod of Clichy. Didon [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] became his successor in the episcopal office no later than 628 or 629.
