Roman Smolej ( Slovenian. Roman Smolej , born September 6, 1946 in Jesenice) is a Yugoslav and Slovenian hockey player who played as a striker.

Biography
He graduated from high school in Jesenice and the Higher Commercial School in Maribor. Formally, in Yugoslavia he worked at the Jesenice iron foundry ( Slovenian Železarna Jesenice ) from 1972 to 1988, in 1988-1992 he worked as the company's financial director, in 1993-1998 he worked as a director of the Cartronik Ljubljana enterprise, he procured at the Nirosteel (Jesenice) enterprise [1 ] .
Until 1968, he played as a hockey player for the Akroni Jesenice club. In 1968, together with Slavko Beravs , Vlado Yug and Rudy Heathy , he joined the Olympia club in Slovenia, for which he was criticized. This led to a serious scandal, since before no one had passed from Akroni Jesenice to the camp of their most important opponents [2] [1] . He played until 1972 for the Ljubljana team. In the 1973/1974 season, he was already a member of the Jesenice club. For the SFRY team, Smoley played at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics. In 15 games at the Olympics scored 6 goals and gave 6 assists; played at the world championship 1966/1967.
In the seasons 1985/1986 and 1986/1987, Smoley worked as a trainer for the Akroni Jesenice club and won the Yugoslav championship twice with him. In 2007, for his services to Slovenian hockey, he was introduced to the Slovenian Hockey Hall of Fame [1] .
