History

A group of 11 French nuns arrived in Istanbul on October 7, 1856. They took over the management of the House of the Holy Spirit ( French: Maison du Saint-Esprit ), a boarding school in the Pangalt quarter, which was named after the Holy Spirit Cathedral built next to it in 1846. It was run by the daughters of mercy ( French Filles de la Charité ), a community of apostolic life for women in the Catholic Church . The official opening of the French boarding school under the name "Lyceum of Our Lady in Zion" took place on November 27 of the same year [1] . He became the first school for girls in the Ottoman Empire. In the boarding school for Christian girls, Jews soon began to appear. Since 1863, Muslim women were also able to attend school after the request of noble families of the empire and the approval of the Ottoman sultan [2] [3] .

The school closed during World War I when French nuns fled the country during a difficult war in which their country was an adversary of the Ottoman Empire.

In 1919, the Lyceum reopened. Since the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, it was subordinate to the Ministry of National Education, and Turkish administrators and teachers became part of the school staff. The lyceum also began to perform the functions of a day school. The elementary school was liquidated in 1971, and the boarding school in 1972. Since 1989, the head of the school administration began to be elected from the secular, while at the same time, the nuns continued to work in the school. Since the academic year 1996/1997, the lyceum began to accept boys for training, thus interrupting the 140-year history of the school as an educational institution exclusively for girls [2] .

Cultural Events

The international piano competition was organized by the Lyceum in 2013 [4] .

In 2014, a chamber music concert was held at the school in memory of harpist Fatma Jeren Nejipoglu , who died as a result of the crash of Flight 447 of Air France in 2009 [5] .

In 2015, an exhibition entitled “Women from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey” ( tour: Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyet'e Kadınlar ), showing Christian, Jewish and Muslim women, mainly on postcards from 1880 to 1930, was held in the art gallery of the Lyceum . [6] .
