Composition
This is the longest song in Bowie’s discography , a little over 10 minutes long. The song begins with a buzz, followed by a few moans of a guitar and the sounds of passing trains. The lyrics contain various literary and mystical references: from Shakespeare (“these are the things from which dreams are woven”) to Alistair Crowley , Kabbalah [1] and Gnosticism [1] . It is on this track that Bowie presents himself as the Thin White Duke [2] . It also contains frequently quoted verses: “These are not side effects of cocaine / I think it should be love.”
