The name of the area comes from the chapel of St. Brigitte (Brigittakapelle) located on its territory since the 17th century.
Since both the channel of the Danube and the channel of the Danube Canal are located within the boundaries of the district, 21% of the territory is occupied by water spaces. A significant part of the territory of the region was formed by drainage under the regulation of the Danube riverbed in 1870-1875. Therefore, in Brigittenau there are almost no remarkable historical places. Brigittenau's most famous attraction is the Millennium Tower, Austria's second tallest building.
