The explosion was one of a series of terrorist acts committed in 1992-1993 with the aim of persuading the Italian authorities to compromise in the fight against the mafia.
The explosion was carried out using a car filled with explosives and parked next to the old tower of Torre dei Pulchi and the Uffizi Gallery. The tower housed the Academy dei Georgofili , an educational institution specializing in agricultural sciences. The explosion killed five people, and 48 people were injured [1] . The tower was badly damaged, and other nearby buildings, including the Uffizi Gallery, were damaged.
Three paintings from the Uffizi (Adoration of the Shepherds by Gerrit van Honthorst , Concert and Card Players by Bartolomeo Manfredi ) could not be restored. Other paintings were damaged by shards of glass and were subsequently restored. [2]
The tower building Torre dei Pulchi collapsed. Many rare books, manuscripts, and works of art kept at the Academy were completely destroyed.
The investigation of the crime was mostly completed, the performers and organizers were convicted, but certain details and accomplices continue to be identified in the 21st century. [3]
