Life

When Fernando de la Cerda died in 1275, Alfonso’s grandmother, Violanta of Aragon , took him and his newborn brother Fernando to Aragon. There they were brought up for 13 years in the Khativa fortress.

Grandfather Alfonso, king of Castile Alfonso X, wanted to divide his kingdom. Sancho was to inherit Castile, and Alfonso was to inherit Leon. After the death of Alfonso X in 1284, Sancho usurped the throne of Leon and was crowned as Sancho IV. In September 1288, King of Aragon Alfonso III freed Alfonso de la Cerda and declared him king of Castile and Leon. Despite the support of the king of Aragon, Alfonso could not regain the throne. In 1304, under the Treaty of Torrell between the King of Aragon, Jaime II and the King of Castile Ferdinand IV, Alfonso agreed to abandon all claims to the throne of Leon. In turn, he was appointed Lord of Alba, Bejar, and Gibraleon, as well as other estates, possessions, and appanages scattered throughout Castile and Leon. Such territorial remoteness of possessions from each other would not allow Alfonso de la Cerda to form a large independent possession.

Later, King Charles IV of France granted Alfonso de la Cerda the title of Baron de Lunel, a municipality located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.
