Chain

Zepolis [1] ( lat. Cepola ) is a genus of marine ray-finned fish from the family of chainworms (Cepolidae). Marine predatory fish that live from the shores of England to the Mediterranean Sea , in the Indian and Western Pacific from New Zealand to Japan [2] .

Description

Fish of medium or large sizes. The body is thin, elongated, strongly compressed from the sides, gradually sharpening towards the tail. The body is short. The anus is located under the base of the pectoral fin. Head compressed laterally, blunt, very short. The lateral line rises from the upper end of the gill opening to the dorsal fin and then goes along its base. Eye diameter 3 times in head length. The mouth is finite, oblique. The snout is very short. The teeth are thin, long. Gill openings wide. The dorsal and anal fins are long. The dorsal fin begins on the back of the head, the anal fin - somewhat behind the base of the pectoral fin - both fins merge with the caudal fin. The pectoral fins are short. The caudal fin is reduced [2] .

Biology

Bottom fish living at depths of 400 meters. They live in burrows, which they build in sandy or silty soil, or hide in other shelters and in caves. In shelters, fish spend most of the day and become active with dusk. Sometimes they swim in an upright position in the water column. It feeds mainly on small planktonic crustaceans .
