Biography

Born in a family of influential German theater critic and Jewish essayist Alfred Kerr . Her father’s books were among those burned by the Nazis in May 1933 after coming to power. Kerr publicly opposed the Nazi party and in the same 1933 went into exile with his family. After visiting Prague , Vienna, Switzerland and France, in 1936 he received permission to enter England, and the family settled in London, where they were in need. Years of persecution are described, from the point of view of the child, by the daughter of Kerr Judith in the books When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit ("The Pink Rabbit Hitler Stole", 1971) and Bombs on Aunt Dainty (the first publication called The Other Way Round ).

During World War II, Judith Kerr helped the wounded soldiers, subsequently received a scholarship to study at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and became an artist. After graduation, she worked for some time as a teacher of drawing. Subsequently, she met the BBC screenwriter Nigel Neal. She later worked as a television screenwriter om. BBC

Judith dreamed of becoming a writer since childhood, but she began to write and illustrate books only when her own children learned to read.

He is the author of a three-volume autobiography and the famous book for children, “The Tiger Who Came to Drink Tea, ” which later went through many reprints. She quickly became one of the favorite children's books in the UK [5] [6] , and was also translated into several foreign languages.

She also owns a series of stories about the cat Moga. From 1970 to 2015, 18 books were published in the series. The main character, which is not typical for the children's series, dies in the last book - “Farewell, Mog” (Goodbye, Mog). In 2004, the cat Mog became the character of the animated series “Mog the Forgetful Cat” (Mog the Forgetful Cat), created based on the books of the writer.

In 2015, the cat Mog became the hero of Sainsbury's supermarket New Year’s ad.

One of Kerr's latest books, My Henry, published in 2011, is dedicated to her husband.

Her son from marriage with Nigel Neal is the writer Matthew Neal, screenwriter of television films about the fictional English scientist .
