History

The first restaurant of the chain in Passage San Galli on Kuznetskiy Most Street

The name of the restaurant comes from the deity Jagannatha [1] .

The Jagannath chain was founded in 2000 [1] , the first restaurant was opened in Moscow on the Kuznetsk Bridge [2] on August 15 [3] . It is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Moscow [4] . Chef Yuri Aistov participated in its creation, helping to create an assortment of restaurants. He is the uncle of the co-owner of the network - George Aistov. It is known that the latter adopted Vaisnavism in the United States in 1989, and seven years later returned to Russia. Georgy Aistov is also the organizer of other projects related to Vedic culture , in particular, the Vedalife festival, which takes place in St. Petersburg and Moscow [5] .

In Moscow, the third cafe in the chain was Jagannath, located at ul. Zemlyanoy Val , 24/30 (near Kurskaya metro station). It opened on February 25, 2011 [6] , three weeks after the opening of a second restaurant near the Novoslobodskaya metro station on February 4 [7] [8] . September 24, 2013 was opened "Jagannath" on Maroseyka , which became the fourth [9] . On July 1, 2014, the fifth restaurant was opened in Moscow, located on Tverskaya Street [10] , and at the beginning of 2017, another appeared on the Prospect Mira [11] . The seventh “Jagannath” in Moscow was the store in Krylatskoye, which opened on March 6, 2017 [12] . At the end of the month, the eighth restaurant on Proletarskaya [13] was opened, which was then closed and moved closer to the Belorusskaya metro [14] [15] on May 17, 2019.

In St. Petersburg, “Jagannath” was opened on February 28, 2014, it includes a shop and a small cafe-teahouse [16] [17] .

Assortment

Moscow restaurants serve exclusively vegetarian dishes that do not contain fish or animal meat. At the same time, the assortment of dishes is quite wide [2] , includes snacks , salads , soups , desserts [4] , and among the main dishes there are also vegetarian analogues of meat dishes without its content, in particular, vegetarian dumplings and tofu nuggets [18] . There are also vegan dishes on the menu. Products for cooking are delivered from various parts of the world, in particular, spices from India and Thailand , tofu is purchased in Europe , and some products are also brought from Mexico [4] . In the restaurants of the network, the journal Vegetarian [4] [5] is distributed free of charge.

The cafe in St. Petersburg also offers a vegetarian menu, but in a reduced volume. The menu also includes breakfasts and three-course business lunches [16] .

There is a loyalty system in the Jagannath network: a 10% discount on all dishes in the restaurant is provided on the Vegetarian card, and 5% in stores. In addition, the restaurant provides a discount to all visitors in the amount of 30% an hour before closing [19] .

Reviews and criticism

It is noted that “Jagannath” became the first institution in Moscow, where vegetarianism was presented from such a position that it became interesting for visitors who were skeptical about healthy food [2] . Also, inexpensive prices for dishes with a healthy diet were noted [18] . However, there are opposing opinions, namely that the prices in "Jagannath" are three times as high [20] . Some visitors believe that the religious component is too intrusively developed in restaurants [5] .
