Content

Origin

This song is one of the few authors of the text and music of which is the vocalist of the group Lane Staley . In the notes for Music Bank, Jerry Cantrell said the following about her:

Such an amazing song. I am very proud of Lane for writing it. In the past, when I tried myself in vocals, he supported me very much, and here is a great example of when he dared to take up a guitar and composed a masterpiece. [3]

Reception

in 1992, the song was released as a single, reaching 34th place on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and 27th on the Modern Rock Tracks charts . “Angry Chair” is notable for being the only song of the group that was more successful on the Modern Rock Tracks chart than Mainstream Rock Tracks , as most of the Alice in Chains singles showed lower performance or did not fall into it at all. In May 1993, the single was released in the UK [4] , reaching the Top-40 of the English chart and Top-30 in Ireland .

AllMusic portal reviewer Ned Raggett noted that “ Lane Staley and Jerry Cantrell turn the song into something really impressive,” adding that the song has “exciting couplets, ominous, echoed and filled with [the atmosphere] of impending doom” [5] .

The MIDI version of the Angry Chair sounds on Map 25: Bloodfalls of the popular Doom II computer video game.

Video clip

The video for the song "Angry Chair" was shot in 1992. The director was Matt Makhurin. Later, he will make a video for the song of the band “No Excuses”.

Live performances

Dirt 's album marked the appearance of Staley's contribution to the guitar, and the Angry Chair was one of the few songs on which he regularly played guitar during live performances. The song is also a fan favorite. The end of the song was often used as the lead to another famous song, “Man in the Box,” at a concert. Current Alice in Chains members performed the acoustic version of the Angry Chair with former Stone Temple Pilots / ex- Velvet Revolver singer Scott Wayland in a concert on September 30, 2007 in Austin, Texas .

Alice in Chains performed the acoustic version of the “Angry Chair” for its appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1996 (although the song was excluded from broadcasting), and the song was included on the Unplugged live album and home video release. Live performances of the song can also be found in the singles “Heaven Beside You” and “Get Born Again” and in the live album Live.
