Biography
Born in a family of scientists. In 1939 he entered the astronomical department of Leningrad University , in November of that year he was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army , where he remained until the end of World War II . In September 1945 he returned to university, in 1950 he entered the graduate school of Leningrad State University. In 1953 he became a junior researcher at the Pulkovo Observatory , in 1954 he defended his thesis . He participated in the Pulkovo program for absolute determination of the coordinates of stars , was engaged in the analysis of star catalogs , methods and organization of observation of the bodies of the solar system . He participated in observations of total solar eclipses of 1954 and 1958 . In 1967 and 1968 he was the head of the expedition of the Pulkovo Observatory in the southern hemisphere , he supervised the installation of a new large passenger instrument in Chile . Since 1972, he worked as deputy director of the Pulkovo Observatory , in 1979 - 1982 he served as its director. In 1982 he defended his doctoral dissertation . In June of that year, he died tragically in a car accident.
The author of more than 100 scientific papers. Since 1959, for a number of years, he taught the course of fundamental astrometry at Leningrad University. Since 1964 - member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), since 1973 - member of the IAU Commission on Positional Astronomy, since 1979 - its vice president.
