Biography

Mark Weil was born in Tashkent in a military family; mother is a graduate of the Kiev Theater Institute. He graduated from the directing department of the Tashkent Theater and Art Institute. In 1976, he founded the first non-state theater in the USSR ( Ilkhom ) with a group of graduates of the Tashkent Theater and Art Institute, the first in the USSR (and still the only one in Uzbekistan ).

Creativity

Many performances were staged by Mark Weil in other theaters - for example, in the Mossovet Theater ( Moscow ), in Bulgaria , Yugoslavia , and the USA . His works have always been distinguished by their own style and impeccable work with actors. Weil was one of the brightest and most talented professional theater directors in the vast expanses of the former USSR. Many of his performances were presented at international festivals.

He is also the author of many television films. His last major work is the documentary “End of the Century. Tashkent ”- was shown at several international festivals. [one]

Weil was an outstanding teacher who brought up a galaxy of outstanding artists and directors, including at the Ilkhom Theater School of Dramatic Art, which he opened in 1995 . In addition, he lectured at other schools of dramatic art, as well as universities around the world.

Weil was an Honored Artist of Uzbekistan. In 2006, he was awarded the “Prize” by the Presidential Council for the Culture of Art under the project “To Support Russian Theater Initiatives” for the creation and operation of the Laboratory of Young Directors of Central Asia and Kazakhstan at the Ilkhom Theater [2] .

Doom

On September 6, 2007, at about 11 o’clock in the evening, Mark Weil returned to his home on Afrosiab Street after the last rehearsal of Aeschylus ’s play “ Oresteia ” (the premiere was to take place and took place the next day, September 7, 2007 ). At the entrance of the house, two unidentified men in black baseball caps and T-shirts were waiting for him. They caused the director several stab wounds in the stomach and blows to the head. Mortally wounded Mark Weil was taken to the hospital, where after a while he died on the operating table.

Farewell to Mark Weil took place in Tashkent and later in Moscow , where his body was cremated. After cremation, the remains of Mark Weil were sent for burial in Seattle [3] , where his widow and two daughters live.

On February 17, 2010, in Tashkent, three killers, Islamic fanatics (Yokub Gafurov (a citizen of Tajikistan ), Alisher Satarov and Kahramon Pulatov) [4] [5] , who attacked the director for the performance of “Imitation of the Quran,” were sentenced to 13, 17 and 20 years [6] .
