Eddie and the hot rods

Eddie & The Hot Rods is a British rock band that was formed in 1975 in Southend, Essex , England , and played energetic pub rock (much tougher and faster than their like-minded people), which was an important link connecting the British garage rhythm end blues of the 1960s and punk rock [1] . Eddie & The Hot Rods (according to Trouser Press) played a key role in the development of the British new wave. [2] . Unlike most pub rockers, Eddie & The Hot Rods preferred teenagers to social topics (usually related to working class life) [1] . The group broke up in 1981 ; Since 1985, it has been reformed more than once and has been speaking to this day.

Group History

Vocalist Barry Masters and guitarist Dave Higgs formed Eddie & The Hot Rods in Southend, Essex, in the spring of 1975. “Eddie” in the name of the group is the name of the amulet doll that the musicians pounded on stage at their early concerts. Wall and Steele left the roster by the end of the year; they were replaced by 15-year-old bassist Paul Gray and a little later - Lew Lewis (harmonica). By right, the manager Ed Hollis was also considered a full-fledged member of the group, who tried to make the British The Stooges out of the team.

The band's first single, “Writing on the Wall,” was released on Island Records . Almost immediately, Lewis was fired for acting weird; he later formed the Lew Lewis Reformer. By the summer of 1978, the group became the most popular on the pub-rock scene and broke several attendance records at the famous Marki club . During these concerts, Live At Marquee was recorded, followed by the first single “Teenage Depression” (# 35, UK Singles Chart ) [3] and the album of the same name.

In 1976, Graham Douglas from Kursaal Flyers joined the band: with him a group (like The Rods) recorded “Do Anything You Wanna Do,” a single that entered the British Top 10 in the summer of 1977 [1] . The album Life on the Line (# 27 UK) [3] , however, marked the beginning of the end: punk rock was gaining popularity in Britain, and the audience of Eddie & The Hot Rods began to decline rapidly. After releasing two more albums, the group broke up in 1981. Gray moved to The Damned . Masters formed The Inmates . Steve Nicol joined One the Juggler. [1]

1983 -

After it became clear that neither The Inmates nor One the Juggler were able to succeed on the punk scene, Masters and Nichol reassembled Hot Rods, inviting guitarist Warren Kennedy and bass player Tony Cranny . Tony Cranney ). After the release of the live album (at Waterfront Records ), the quartet disbanded, but reappeared in 1985 with the new bassist Russell Strutter .

For some time (in 1992 ) the quartet performed in its original composition (Masters, Nicol, Higgs, Gray). It later included Steve Walwyn and Gordon Russell (both from Dr. Feelgood), Mick Rogers (ex- Manfred Mann's Earth Band ) and Madman Keyo .
