Creation

After the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the German Football Union decided to finance the creation of the National Museum of German Football from the world championship profits. Of the 14 cities that applied for its accommodation, in May 2007, the union chose the cities of Cologne, Oberhausen, Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund, deciding to acquire land for this purpose in North Rhine-Westphalia , the most populous federal land of Germany. At an extraordinary meeting of the German Football Association on April 24, 2009, delegates chose a territory in the center of Dortmund, south of its train station , which was used as a bus station before the museum appeared [2] . The city of Dortmund announced an international architectural competition for the project of the museum building [3] . On May 4, 2011, the jury of the architectural competition singled out and rewarded three of the 24 proposed plans. The only winner was not announced. On June 29, 2011, at a joint press conference, the authorities of Dortmund and the German Football Union finally announced two winners. On the recommendation of the jury, the final design of the building [4] [5] was determined during the negotiations and published on September 26, 2011 in the daily press [6] . The construction of the museum began in September 2012, work started on September 20 in the presence of NSF President Wolfgang Nirsbach and North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hannelora Kraft [7] .

The German Football Museum is located near the city’s main railway station and is part of the arts and culture quarter, located between the creative center of Dortmunder U and the Dortmund Concert Hall .
