The Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan named after Saparmurad Turkmenbashi the Great ( Turkmen: Beýik Saparmyrat Türkmenbaşy adyndaky Türkmenistanyň Goranmak ministrliginiň Harby instituty ) is a higher education institution (higher education institution) of Turkmenistan located in Ashgabat with other higher education institutions for the Ministry of Defense with other higher education institutions , as well as retraining and advanced training of officers [1] . In addition, the Institute provides training for specialists in customs [2] .

History
After the collapse of the USSR and independence, Turkmenistan was faced with the outflow of Soviet military officers and the need to form its own training system for military personnel. To solve these problems, a military faculty was established at the Turkmen State University on October 3, 1992, and a Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan was established on the basis of the military faculty of the Turkmen State University on September 1, 1993 [3] [4] . Students of the military faculty of TSU became in 1993 the first students of the new university [5] .
The institute bears the name of the first president of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov [6] .
In 2011, the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov approved the new position of the institute [7] .
Structure
The university includes the following faculties: artillery; air force; combined arms; air defense; communications and automatic control systems [8] ; special military training [9] ; management [9] ; customs business [10] ; academic faculty [5],.
The structure of the Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan includes 3 specialized secondary military schools [9] :

- No. 2 named after Alp Arslan ( Dashoguz city)
- No. 3 named after Soltan Sanjar ( Mary )
Pupils of military schools receive secondary education, and after graduation they have the right to enter the Military Institute without military service in the armed forces of Turkmenistan [11] .

Training
In the academic year 1992/1993, 90 first-year students were admitted to the military faculty of the Turkmen State University. The following year, they continued their second year studies of the newly formed Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan.
About 400 cadets enter the first year of the Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan annually. In total, about 2,000 cadets study at the institute [8] .
Both men and women study at the institute [9] . Women's training is focused on obtaining related professions for the armed forces: a specialist in logistical support, a psychologist, a financier, and a lawyer [8] .
To ensure the learning process and training of students, university audiences are equipped with simulators that allow them to develop skills in managing military equipment and participating in military exercises [15] .
Upon graduation from the Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan, officers ’certificates are handed over to their graduates [16] .
Material and technical base
From 2004 to 2012, the Military Institute of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan was located in the building at the address: Ashgabat, Saparmurad Turkmenbashi Avenue, 31 [17] - built by the Turkish company "GAP" . The opening of the building took place on March 1, 2004 [18] . The construction cost is US $ 20 million, according to an agreement between the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan and the GAP company, signed on June 7, 2002.
On January 27, 2012, a complex of new buildings constructed by the Turkish company Polimeks was opened next to the former building of the Military Institute. In the new buildings, in addition to the expanding Military Institute, there is also a specialized military school No. 1, the Central House of Officers, the Emergency Management Center of the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan and several barracks [5] . The construction cost amounted to 219 million US dollars. The new address of the institute: Ashgabat, Kopetdag etrap, street of the hero of Turkmenistan Atamurat Niyazov, house 135 [19] [20] .
The Military Institute complex has a number of sports facilities: a swimming pool, a basketball and volleyball courts, a mini-soccer field, etc. [21] .
Cadets' leisure activities
The institute has a “Watanchi” hockey team taking part in the Turkmenistan ice hockey championship [22] . In the season 2018/2019, the club for the first time in its history became the bronze medalist of the national championship [23] , and at the end of 2018 became the finalist of the President’s Hockey Cup of Turkmenistan [24] .
