History
Despite the fact that the song was never released as a single , it still remains one of the most famous works of Alice in Chains [1] . The composition is notable for its emotional acoustic instrumental part and electric guitar solo , as well as a gloomy text regarding loneliness, despair [2] and death [3] . Many regard the song’s content as a veiled statement by its author, Lane Staley , of his disappointment at the lack of privacy (due to media attention to his life). Nutshell is considered one of the key records of the 1990s alternative rock , despite the fact that it did not hit any of the Billboard charts or any other international hit parade.
Concert Performances
Alice in Chains first performed a song in the Kansas City Memorial Hall on September 22, 1993 [4] . One of the most famous concert versions of the song is the acoustic version of "Nutshell" performed by the group during the MTV Unplugged show on April 10, 1996. The composition opened the concert, later it was published on the official CD and DVD of this event [5] . At this concert, the group last performed this song with Lane Staley [4] .
At Alice in Chains concerts, guitarist Jerry Cantrell always dedicates Nutshell to the memory of Lane Staley and Mike Starr (the band’s first bass player) [6] [7] . June 24, 2018, during a performance at the Hellfest Open Air Festival in Klison , Alice in Chains dedicated the song to their longtime friend and drummer Pantera, Vinnie Paul , who died two days before the concert. [8]
