The land of Adele [1] ( fr. Terre Adélie ) - the Antarctic sector claimed by France is the administrative district of its Southern and Antarctic territories . The boundaries of the territory pass along the coast of Antarctica between the points with coordinates of 66 ° 12 ′ Yu. 136 ° 11 ′ e. and 66 ° 48 ′ Yu. 142 ° 02 ′ E, from these points the border goes deeper into the continent at 2,600 km up to the South Pole . The total length of the coastline is about 350 km. The formed area covers an area of over 432 thousand km², which is almost completely covered with ice .

The coast was opened in 1837 by the French navigator Jules Dumont-Duurville (d'Urville) and named it after his wife Adele.
Since January 12, 1956 , the permanent year-round French research and development polar station Dumont d'Urville is located on the territory of the Antarctic coast with coordinates of 66 ° 40 ′ S. 140 ° 01 ′ E, the population is 33 people in winter and up to 78 people in summer. The first French station Port Martin was founded on April 9, 1950 at the point with coordinates of 66 ° 49′04 ″ s. 141 ° 23′39 ″ E, but was destroyed by fire on the night of January 23-24, 1952 . The winter population of Port Martin was 11 in 1950 and 17 in 1951 .
France also had another polar base - Charcot Station, located at the depth of the continent on the Antarctic ice sheet at an altitude of 2400 m, 320 km from Dumont d'Urville station, coordinates 69 ° 22 ′ S. 139 ° 01 ′ e. The station was opened in 1957 on the eve of the International Geophysical Year and existed until 1960 . The station staff consisted of only three people. The base was mainly built into the snow (to protect against strong winds ) buildings.
On both sides, the Adele Land is bordered by the Australian Antarctic Territory , namely Clary Coast (part of Wilkes Land ) to the west and George V Land to the east.
