The publication was issued by the USSR Geological Research Commission (1961-1991) by the publishers of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Science, and republican academies of sciences. The series contains about a million geological information.
History
The Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences set the task of collecting materials (both manuscript and published) related to geological surveys ever carried out on the territory occupied by the USSR in order to create the most complete collection of information on regional geology of the USSR.
In 1955, at the initiative of Academician V. A. Obruchev [1] , the Commission on the Geological Exploration of the USSR (KOGI) was created.
A monograph by V. A. Obruchev, “ History of the geological exploration of Siberia ” (5 periods, 12 books, 1931-1949), was adopted as an example of systematization and presentation of materials [2] .
In 1959, an Instruction for the compilation of volumes “Geological exploration of the USSR” was developed, which was sent to all geological organizations of the USSR that participated in the preparation of the publication [3] .
At the end of 1991, the publication ceased to exist in connection with the collapse of the USSR (December 26, 1991).
In 2017, geological funds were published in Armenia (at geo-fund.am ), which included volumes of “Geological exploration ” in the Armenian SSR.
Edition
In 1961-1991, KOGI published 50 volumes of 50 regions of the USSR , consisting of 1,050 books [ specify ] - “Geological exploration of the USSR” covering the entire territory of the USSR since 1800.
Each book, in addition to abstracts and annotations (containing basic data on various studies), is equipped with indexes (copyright, subject, geographical, minerals, minerals), including up to 3000 indexes, which greatly facilitates and accelerates the search for the necessary information.
The books contain review chapters containing a scientific analysis of what has been achieved over a given period of time in each of the branches of geology.
Books are built on a territorial basis (the USSR is divided into 50 regions) and follow one after another in chronological order.
The publication is a unique informational fund in its content and volume, which does not exist either for other fields of knowledge or for the geology of foreign countries. The publication, along with its practical value, has become a valuable reference source for people working in the field of the history of Earth sciences [4] .
The publication includes books and brochures, articles from magazines and collections, major newspaper articles, explanatory notes to geological maps, and geological sections of complex works. All of these publications are abstracts, annotations, or bibliographic descriptions.
Each volume has consolidated chapters (or paragraphs) on the branches of geology, including stratigraphy, paleontology, geology of Quaternary deposits (including geomorphology), lithology, paleogeography, and tectonics.
Abstracts are arranged according to the year of publication of works, within a year - in the alphabetical order of the authors. There are auxiliary indexes: author, subject, systematic, geographical, minerals, minerals and deposits.
Academician A. L. Yanshin, vice president of the USSR Academy of Sciences, emphasized:
thanks to the published issues of the series “Geological exploration of the USSR”, geologists became aware of thousands and thousands of actual data on the geology of the Soviet Union, which they could not take into account in their generalizations, since these data were stored only in geological funds and were not available for wide use.
The publication allowed saving time on planning, preparing and conducting regular geological explorations, and avoiding duplication of previous work. There is no such publication - in the volume and scope of the material, which serves as a powerful reference and information fund - in no other country, and not only in the field of geology, but also in other sciences. Thanks to the publication of the series, geologists became aware of thousands and thousands of factual data on geology, which they could not previously take into account in their generalizations, since these data were stored only in geological funds and were not available for wide use [5] .
Structure
Volumes are divided into issues by period in accordance with the adopted periodization:
- I period from 1800-1860
- II period from 1861-1917
- III period from 1918-1928
- IV period from 1929-1940
- V period from 1941-1945
- VI period from 1946-1950
- VII period from 1951-1955
- VIII period from 1956-1960
- IX period from 1961-1965
- X period from 1966-1970
The period can be divided into several books - parts.
Guide
The responsible editors of various volumes of the publication in 1953-1991 were:
- Shatsky, Nikolai Sergeevich
- Nalivkin, Dmitry Vasilievich
- Tikhomirov, Vladimir Vladimirovich - participated in all volumes of the publication (deputy or executive editor).
