Nikola Mektić ( Croatian Nikola Mektić ; born December 24, 1988 in Zagreb , Croatia ) is a professional Croatian tennis player specializing in doubles. Winner of 7 ATP tournaments in doubles, including three Masters ( Monte Carlo , Indian Wells , Madrid ). He reached the semifinals at Wimbledon 2017 and at the Roland Garros 2018 in doubles. After winning the Masters in Indian Wells in 2019, he reached his highest 5th position in the ATP ranking .

General Information

Nicola started playing tennis at the age of six, after his brother Luca started playing sports. Likes to watch television shows and movies.
Favorite cover is grass, favorite tournament is Wimbledon . His childhood idols are called Pete Sampras and Greg Rosedsky , currently admiring the game of Roger Federer .
He loves basketball , cheers for the Cleveland Cavaliers , his favorite player is LeBron James .

Sports career

Career start

He held his first match in the futures tournament in 2004 at the age of 15. From the very beginning of his career, he was announced in tournaments in both singles and doubles. He won his first doubles title at the junior futures in Bergem in 2005. Four months later, another junior futures contract in St. Pölten ended in victory in singles. In parallel to the junior tournaments, I tried myself on adult futures , where I won the first title in Brcko in 2008. In 2006, together with Antonio Sancic, he received a wild-card for the tournament in Zagreb , thus playing his first match in the ATP round. In 2007 he made his debut at the Challenger series tournament, a year later he played the first match in the ATP round in singles.

2008 - 2016

After the first victories at the “futures”, Nicola continues to perform at the tournaments of the “futures” and “challenge” series, as well as at home tournaments in Umag and Zagreb in singles and doubles. In 2010, together with Ivan Zovko in Ljubljana, he won his first Challenger . In 2016, he won four “Challengers” in a pair, due to which he rose significantly in the ranking. In total, during this period, Nicola won 6 “futures” and 9 “challengers” in doubles; "Futures" - in a single.

2016 - 2019

In 2016, he concentrated on playing in pairs. In July, at a home tournament in Umag, paired with Antonio Sancic for the first time reached the finals, where their duet lost to the pair Martin Klizjan , David Marrero - 4-6, 2-6.

In 2017, he began to consistently fall into the main tournament grids and practically stopped playing “Challengers”, focusing on ATP level tournaments. In February, paired with Brian Baker for the first time won the ATP 250 tournament , defeating Ryan Harrison and Steve Johnson in Memphis with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Having won the title in Budapest and reaching the final in Shenzhen , by the end of 2017 he climbed to 32nd line in the world doubles rating.

The year 2018 began with two defeats in the first round in Doha and Sydney , after which it reached the final in Sofia and Rio de Janeiro . In April, together with Alexander Peyia, he won the tournament in Marrakech , breaking the resistance of Benoit Peir and Edouard Roger-Wasslen in the final - 7-5, 3-6, [10-7]. A month later, in a pair, he won the first title of the Masters series in Madrid , beating Bob and Mike Brianov , who appeared in the final, 5-3, ret. After this victory, by the end of the year, it reached a maximum of semi-finals, including Roland Garros , which made it possible to enter the top twenty world ranking.

In the mixed race, he became the finalist of the US Open 2018 in a team with Alicia Rosolskaya .

2019 began with a first-round loss in Qatar , Sydney and the Australian Open . After - a victory in a tournament in Sofia paired with Jürgen Meltzer over a pair of Chen-Pen Syeh , Christopher Rungkat - 6-2, 4-6, [10-2]. In March, paired with Horacio Ceballos defeated a pair of Lukash Kubot , Marcelo Melo in Indian Wells , 4-6, 6-4, [10-3], gaining a second victory in the tournament of the Masters series. Davis Cup

He played in the Davis Cup in 2011 , 2017 and 2018 as a member of the Croatian national team . In 2011, in the playoffs of the World Group, he won his singles match against Raven Klasen , representing South Africa - 7-6, 6-1, after which the score between the Croats and South Africans became 4-1 in favor of the Croats.

In 2018, as part of the Croatian national team, he won the Davis Cup, however, as part of the rally, he took part in only one game - in a doubles match in the quarterfinals with the national team of Kazakhstan.
