History
After the liquidation of the Kokand Khanate in 1876, the city of Osh became part of the Fergana region of the Russian Empire . In 1877 a military field church of mud brick and a wooden frame was built in the city. In 1879, an altar was attached to the building and a bell tower was built with eight bells. November 7, 1879 the church was consecrated in the name of Archangel Michael. The building was about 23 meters long and 8 meters wide. Over time, the temple became too small for a growing number of worshipers [1] [2] .
The modern temple was built on the site of the old in 1904-1910, according to the standard design of the regimental church. Its size is 32 by 15 meters, and its capacity is 700 people, the height of the bell tower with the cross was 32 meters [1] .
On December 10, 1928, the Osh Executive Committee decided to close the church and open a club in it. The appearance of the church was disfigured: crosses were dropped, the dome and bell tower were destroyed, the iconostasis and the altar were destroyed. Divine services in the former church were held until the 1950s. In 1952, the House of Culture-1 was opened in the building and a major overhaul was carried out, further distorting the original architectural appearance. The community continued to serve in the chapel at the temple, but in 1962 it was also taken away. Then a private house on Khokhlova Street, 19, was bought, where a prayer house was equipped. In the 1980s, the Osh Regional Philharmonic Society worked in the building of the former church [1] .
On March 4, 1991, when the abbot, Archpriest Valeria Malakhov, the community returned to the temple building. In 1992, the building was returned to the Orthodox community. On December 2, 1995, the archbishop of Tashkent and Central Asian Vladimir consecrated the temple [1] . During the Kyrgyz-Uzbek massacre of 2010, the temple sheltered people of different nationalities, baking and distribution of bread was organized. On the third day of the massacre, the prior abbot, Archpriest Victor Reymgin, performed a procession around the rebellious city, urging people to stop the violence [3] .
