Biography
Born in the family of the Zurich burgher Ulrich Edlibach, who performed the duties of the vogt in Grüningen and Baden , and Anna Landolt from Einsiedeln . The mother belonged to a wealthy family of hardware dealers, and after her first husband died in 1462, she married the mayor of Zurich, Hans Waldman , an influential politician and reformer, who was overthrown and executed as a result of popular indignation.
In the years 1473-1480, he was in charge of the property management of the Benedictine Ainsideln Abbey in Zurich. In 1487 he was elected to the city council, but after the execution of his stepfather in April 1489, he resigned. He again met in the Small Council in the years 1493-1499 and 1515-1524 [2] . In 1488 he was an oberfogt in Bulach , in the years 1494-1498 in Grüningen , and in 1505-1507 in Greifensee .
Being a staunch Catholic and an ardent opponent of the Reformation and the ideas of Ulrich Zwingli , in 1524 he retired, devoting himself entirely to his family and literary works. He died on August 28, 1530 in Zurich [3] .
Family
In 1472, he married Ursula Roist, with whom he had been married for 45 years and from which he had a total of 18 or 19 children and 70 grandchildren. Of the sons known are: Jacob (1482–1546), a canon in Zurich, Hans (1487–1559), a politician and chronicler, and Ludwig (1492–1557), the successor to the chronicle [4] .
Works
The main historical work of Edlibach is the illustrated “Zurich Chronicle” ( German Zürcher Chronik ), covering the history of the Old Swiss Confederation from 1431 to 1530.
In its main part, brought to 1486 , it is based on the "Zurich", or "Great Burgundy", the chronicle of Dibold Schilling the Elder (1484); later events and facts are set out on the basis of official and archival documents, as well as Edlibach's personal impressions. In this case, the records after 1517 become more concise.
If the description of the facts of the past, for example, the Old Zurich War (1440-1446), Edlibach's work contains many inaccuracies in relation to the events of the second half of the 15th - early 16th centuries. her information is often unique as eyewitness accounts, for example, a message about the author’s visit to Milan in 1479 with his stepfather Valdman [5] .
Of particular value are also colorful illustrations for the chronicle, the author of most of whom was probably Edlibach himself, using the miniatures of Dibold Schilling the Elder and, possibly, other chroniclers as a model. Performed carefully, but unprofessionally, these drawings, in addition to famous historical events, contain interesting images of medieval Zurich and its environs, sketches of architectural monuments and city fortifications.
The Erlibah Chronicle manuscript is kept in the Central Library of Zurich (Ms. A 75).
In the 1480s, he also compiled the Zurich Armorial ( him. Zürcher Wappenbuch ), then the report on the Waldman case of 1489 ( Waldmannscher Auflauf ), and in 1490, the dictionary of the Swiss Argo ( him. Fickabel des rotwelschtz ), in addition to various articles criticizing the Swiss Reformation (1520-1527).
The name of Herold Edlibach is given to a street in Greifensee .
