Volzhsky Research Institute of Hydrocarbon Raw Materials (VNIIUS) is a Russian research institute specializing in the production and consumption of hydrocarbon raw materials . In Soviet times - the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Hydrocarbon Raw Materials, after the collapse of the USSR and until 2005 - the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Hydrocarbon Raw Materials. Since 2005, VNIIUS JSC is a commercial organization .

History
On April 19, 1965, by Order No. 74 of the State Committee for Oil Refining Industry under the Gosplan of the USSR , the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Field Hydrocarbon Raw Materials was organized. VNIIUS was created as the leading research institute in the field of production and consumption of light hydrocarbons [1] .
In 1974, the VNIIUS-12 process was introduced into industrial production - a homogeneous catalytic method for alkaline demercaptanization of light hydrocarbon feedstocks [2] .
The Institute building is located on Nikolay Ershov Street. A three-story capital building with a basement and a courtyard area, on which there are garages, warehouses and workshops.
From December 1994 to January 1995, VNIIUS specialists, together with Chevron (USA), conducted pilot tests of the crude oil demercaptanization technology, designed an industrial plant, and manufactured apparatuses, installed apparatuses and commissioned a plant with a capacity of 4 million tons / year.
In 2006-2008 Together with Chevron (USA) and Genesis oil and gas company (Great Britain), two DMS-1 units at Tengizchevroil LLP were modernized to DMS-4 [3] .
Current status
On February 21, 2005, the research institute became the joint-stock company Volzhsky Scientific Research Institute of Hydrocarbon Raw Materials [4] . The organization occupies part of the right wing of the institute, the remaining areas are leased or sold. In the same building, the research institutes are adjacent to: Raiffeisenbank, ZAO SPC Khimtekhno, LLC SPC Intechpromservice, and others.
Structure
The research institute includes laboratories: [5]
- Standardization laboratory;
- Laboratory of technology for desulfurization of hydrocarbons and products, supply of catalysts and neutralizers;
- Laboratory of oil and gas processing technology;
- Laboratory for rationing oil and oil product losses;
- Testing center of petroleum products. Research of oil and oil products;
- Laboratory of gas chromatographic methods of analysis .
Development
The main part of the research and development activities of the research institute falls on the Soviet period and in the 1990s. Processes and technologies developed in the Soviet period are being improved and implemented in modern Russia [6] [7] [8] [3] . Removal of sulfur compounds is a core activity of the research institute, therefore the emblem has the Latin letter " S ", which symbolizes sulfur. The research institute has at least 25 patents [9] .
- Desulfurization catalyst IVKAZCobalt phthalocyanine
- The homogeneous catalyst IVKAZ [10] is a water-soluble cobalt phthalocyanine with a promoting additive. The advantage of the catalyst: high specific activity - the consumption of the catalyst is 0.05 g per tonne of purified raw materials and the flexibility of its application. The IVKAZ catalyst is stable in an alkaline medium up to 100 ° C, which is confirmed by the successful operation of 40 industrial DMD, VHI, and Serox plants worldwide [11] .
- Cobalt phthalocyanine is an active component in the composition of the homogeneous catalyst IVKAZ; it acts as an oxygen carrier.
- The VHI process is the purification of oil and gas condensate from hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans.
- The VHI technology is based on the direct oxidation of low molecular weight mercaptans in oil with atmospheric oxygen in an alkaline medium in the presence of an IVKAZ desulfurization catalyst [12] .
- The DMD process demercaptanization of kerosene and diesel distillate fractions in which the total sulfur content does not exceed the norm.
- The technology of the process is based on the oxidation of mercaptans with atmospheric oxygen to disulfides in the presence of a homogeneous IVKAZ catalyst supported on activated carbon [13] .
- Serox-W Process - Wastewater Treatment
- The essence of the process is the liquid phase oxidation of sulfur compounds ( hydrogen sulfide , sulfide , hydrosulfide, sulfite and sodium mercaptides) contained in aqueous technological effluents with atmospheric oxygen to neutral products (dialkyl disulfides, sodium sulfate and thiosulfate) in the presence of a homogeneous catalyst IVKAZ-W [14] .
