Publication History
Like many other of his early works, which were considered unsuitable for publication when they were first presented in the form of a manuscript, this is not science fiction , but a straightforward literary fiction. The manuscript occupied 481 pages. At the time of publication, this was one of Dickβs two novels, the existence of which was known and which remained unpublished. Another, Voices from the Street (1952), was published in 2007.
Former Philip Dick secretary Dwight Brown wrote an afterword to the novel. As of 2011, the original hardcover edition is out of print [1] ; in July 2012, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published a paperback novel, Time to Pack, which also included Brown's afterword.
Story
After the final victory of the Chinese Communists under the leadership of Mao Zedong in 1949, the American company is preparing to abandon its operations related to China, leaving three of its people to oversee transitional affairs, namely Karl Fitter, Vern Tildon and Barbara Mahler. Verne and Barbara have been inextricably linked with each other since the time of the United States, in 1945, when Barbra lost her virginity. They slept again, but, already older, Barbara became more interested in Carl, who was her younger. Karl is more interested in reading her a handwritten volume of βpersonal philosophy,β but Barbara manages to seduce him shortly before the arrival of the Chinese.
