Biography
Almost nothing is known about the origin and early years of Wiedegern's life. It is only reported that before receiving the episcopal dignity, he was a monk in [1] .
In the lists of heads of the Strasbourg archdiocese, Wiedegern is named the successor of Bishop Gando and the predecessor of Bishop Vandalfried , of whom almost nothing is known [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] .
Wiedegern is the first Bishop of Strasbourg after Rotary , mentioned in modern documents [7] . This only surviving document is the Charter of Privileges to , May 13, 728 given by Wiedeger to the abbot of this monastery Agoald . The donation was made on the occasion of the foundation of this monastery by Bishop Wiedegern, St. Pyrmine, and King of the Franks Theodoric IV . Among the people who also signed this document were the Dukes of Alsace Liutfried and Eberhard . In particular, in the charter for the monastery all his land holdings were assigned, and the brethren of the monastery were given immunity from the subordination of power to any secular and church persons, with the exception of the abbot of the monastery. For violation of these rights, the bishops of Strasbourg had to impose a fine of 50 pounds of silver on the guilty, which went to the treasury of the Murbach Abbey [4] [5] [9] [10] .
Bishop Heddo’s testament dated 762 also mentions that Wiedegern founded Ettenheimmmünster Abbey [4] [5] . However, most likely, this document is the latest falsification, since the first reliable evidence of the existence of this monastery dates back to the 12th century [11] [12] [13] .
The date of death of Videgern is unknown. However, he was to die no later than 734, since then Bishop Heddo [3] [4] [5] [9] became the new head of the Strasbourg diocese.
