Biography
The origin of Boniface is not exactly known [1] . However, one of the medieval documents, as well as onomastic data, allow medieval scholars to suggest that he could be a relative of Gundoin and Wulfoald , representatives of noble families of Australia .
In the life of St. written by Bobolen, Boniface is named Gundoin's successor in the position of Duke of Alsace [1] [2] [3] . The date of Gundoin's death is not precisely known: among the possible names is October 30, 656 [4] and the period after September 6, 667 [5] [6] . However, the first mention of Boniface as the ruler of the Duchy of Alsace dates from around 662 or 663 [1] .
Very little is known about the reign of Boniface [1] . In the legends it is mentioned only that his activity in the position of duke of Alsace led to the insurrection in Zornogau .
Boniface continued the policy of his predecessor on the Christianization of the domains entrusted to him. In 661, he is mentioned as the first benefactor of the in Wisambur . The deed of gift stipulated that the monastery would receive the property of Boniface only after the donor’s death. In 660 or 662, Boniface was also "involved" in the founding of the in Münster . At the request of Duke Boniface, King Childeric II in 662 or 663 approved the act of the foundation of this monastery [7] [8] [9] [10] .
Date of death Boniface is not exactly known. The last document mentioning it is dated 664 or 666 year. This is the charter in which King Childeric II, at the request of Queen made a donation to the church in Speyer . Among those who signed this act were also the Duke Amelric and the bishops Chlodouf Metsky and the Rotary of Strasbourg [11] [12] . It is assumed that Boniface could die soon after, possibly as early as 666 [11] or 667 [6] . In any case, this should have happened no later than March 4, 673, the date of the first mention of the new Duke of Alsace Adalrich . No information about the family and descendants of Boniface in medieval sources has been preserved [1] .
Perhaps in memory of this Duke of Alsace, its name was given to the “village of Boniface” (the modern commune of Vir-o-Val ), in which around 660 the duke built a hunting lodge. Under this name, it was mentioned in the charter of King Zventibold from 896 year [13] .
