At the end of 2015, the airport served 845,710 passengers, which is more than 4 times the population of the city.

The efficiency and the large number of flights are explained by the fact that the operation of the airport is carried out by Turkish investors (ATM Grup) through the trust management of 100% of the shares of Aktau International Airport JSC

History and Development Prospects

The airport has been operating since 1983 and is equipped to receive and release aircraft of almost all types operating in civil aviation.

Joint Stock Company “Aktau International Airport” was established in November 1996. The development of the oil industry of the Caspian region required an increase in cargo transportation, quick delivery of the necessary equipment for oil industry workers, which, in turn, necessitated the reconstruction of the airfield and an increase in the capacity of the passenger terminal

In December 2007, akimat of the Mangistau region held a tender to transfer a 100% state stake in Aktau International Airport JSC to the trust management of a private organization. The shares were transferred to ATM Grup Uluslararasi Havalimani Yapim Yafirim ve Lslet-me Ltd St LLP for a period of 28 years. In the same year, a Concession Agreement was signed between ATM Grup LLP and the Akimat of the Mangystau region for the construction and management of a new passenger terminal for a period of 30 years.

The construction of the new terminal was completed in 2009. The throughput was 450 pass / hour, the total area of 13,400 sq.m., including the area occupied by VIP and CIP - halls. For the comfort and safety of passengers, the terminal is equipped with the latest security and safety equipment, as well as electronic and electromechanical systems, such as: passenger telescopic ladders, electronic check-in desks, HVAC - cooling and heating system, FIDS - flight notification system on an electronic display, X- RAY - X-ray scanners, CCTV - video surveillance system, elevators and escalators.

The final reconstruction of the strip was completed in 2011. Upon completion of the reconstruction, the strip length is 3050 m, the width is 60 m, the strength of the PCN strip coating is 50 units, the strip is equipped with an OVI class 1 light signal system that will allow receiving all aircraft without restrictions.

Aktau International Airport JSC became the winner in the nomination “The Best Airport of the Year in the CIS Countries in 2010” and “Promisingly Developing Airport of the CIS Countries in 2009”.

In October 2011, the world's largest cargo plane An-225 Mriya landed at Aktau Airport.

The Aktau Class B airfield can receive An-124 , An-225 Mriya , Boeing-747-200 , Il-76 and lighter aircraft, as well as all types of helicopters. There is the possibility of receiving and sending equipment and materials by helicopters (planes) for companies engaged in offshore field development. The presence of the seaport and railway communication provides the opportunity to use combined freight transport by sea, air and rail.

Aktau airdrome is located on a flat terrain, more than 300 days a year the weather is favorable for flights, the runway is built on a wind rose , so closing the airdrome due to crosswind restrictions is unlikely.

Aktau Airport was put into operation in 1983 and before the collapse of the USSR was called Shevchenko Central. In 2018, an electric bus was launched in the direction of Aktau - Airport, Airport - Aktau, with a capacity of 47 seats.

Military aviation is based at the airport ( Su-25 , Su-27 aircraft ). In 2004, by a joint order of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a decision was made to include Aktau airdrome in the list of joint-based airfields based on civil aviation. Placing airplanes of the Air Defense Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the Aktau airport implies the protection of the western borders of Kazakhstan.
