Due to the lack of any mosque in Sisli, which was included in the city square as a result of the rapid expansion of Istanbul in the 1940s, local residents demanded the construction of a mosque. At the initiative of the mayor of Istanbul, Lutfi Kirdar , a land area of 3,219 m² was sold at a symbolic price to the trustees of the mosque [1] .
Its construction, designed by architect Ali Wasfi Egeli, began in 1945. It was made in the style of classical Ottoman architecture . In 1949, the mosque was open for prayers. It became the first mosque in Turkey, built after 1923, in the Republican era [1] .
A calligraphic inscription in Arabic script by Hamid Aytach (1891-1982) is fixed above the front door. In the center of the courtyard is a 12-coal shadirvan , which stores water for voodoo , ritual bathing. In the courtyard there are also rooms for the imam , muezzin , other ministers of the mosque and a library [2] .
A staircase leads to the entrance to the mosque. Inside the center is a marble fountain. Benches are located on either side of the entrance. The floor is covered with pink carpet and is heated. The ceiling of the Shshili mosque is decorated. The inner walls are decorated with calligraphic inscriptions. The windows above the marble mihrab are made of colored glass [2] .
