The Statue of Honor ( tour: Onur Anıtı ), also known as the Atatürk Monument , is located in Atatürk Park in the Ilkadım district of Samsun , Turkey. It is dedicated to the landing of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in Samsun, one of the key events of the War of Independence of Turkey . The monument is one of the main attractions of Samsun [1]

History
The equestrian statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was commissioned in 1927 by the governor of Samsun province Kazym Pasha (Kazym Inanch) to the Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel , who had previously won a competition with the jury to create the Victory Monument in Ankara, depicting Atatürk on a horse [2] . The creation of the bronze statue took place in Vienna from 1928 to 1931. On October 29, 1931, the monument was erected on its pedestal in Samsun, on Republic Day . His official open took place on January 15, 1932. The statue of honor became the thirteenth monument to Ataturk and the fourth work of Crippel in Turkey [3] .
The bronze statue depicting Ataturk on a horse is 4.75 meters high, while the total height of the monument is 8.85 meters [4] . The sculptor received a prize of $ 5,500 for his work, and the erection of the monument cost $ 37,000 [5] [6] .
The metal structures for the monument were cast at the Vereinigte Metallwerke metallurgical plant in Austria. Divided into 32 parts, the monument was transported from Hamburg (Germany) on board the Nicea ship along the German-Levantine sea route to Samsun, where he arrived on October 15, 1931 [7] .
