Tullgarn Palace is mainly associated with the names of King Gustav V and Queen Victoria of Baden , who spent more than one summer here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, it was originally built for Duke Fredrick Adolf in the 1770s. Since Tulgarn was a popular summer palace with the Swedish royal family, the palace features beautiful interiors of different eras and personal styles, such as a small living room decorated in the 1790s, a breakfast room in the style of the South German renaissance of the 1890s and a cigar room by Gustav V, which remained almost untouched after his death in 1950.

History

Map of the palace and its environs, 1773.

In 1719, the old Renaissance castle of the late 16th century was demolished. Sweden’s newly-made privy councilor Magnus Julius Delagardi , who had a great fortune thanks to his marriage to Hedwig Katarina Lilly , instructed architect Joseph Gabriel Destain to design the current palace, which was built in 1720-1727. The courtyard, opened from the sea, took its current form in the 1820s. It was modeled on the Logården Garden at the Royal Palace in Stockholm .

In 1772, Tullgarn was acquired by the royal family and became its residence. It was placed at the disposal of the Duke Frederick Adolphus , the younger brother of King Gustav III . From 1778 to 1793, Fredrik Adolf lived there with his beloved Sophie Hagman , and many episodes of this period were preserved in Tullgarnsmminnena , Tullgarn ’s memoirs [2] . Fredrik Adolph modernized the palace in the neoclassical style , adding another floor to the wings and a flat roof in the Italian style. The interiors of Adolf Fredrik are some of the best examples of the Gustavian style in Sweden. Among the artists and designers who participated in their creation, Louis Marelier , Jean-Baptiste Marelier, Per Lung and Ernst Philippe Toman stand out. Many interiors created at that time have been preserved to this day in their original form.

After the death of Fredrik Adolf Tullgarn was granted to his sister, Princess Sophia Albertina , who constantly spent the summer there until her death in 1829. The following year he was granted the heir to the throne, the future king Oscar I , and served as the summer residence of the Swedish royal court during his reign [3] .

Crown Prince Gustav, along with his wife Victoria, received Tullgarn for use in 1881 and made large-scale changes there. The main building was designed more like a modern functional summer house than a royal palace for pleasure. Most of the current interior dates back to the time of King Gustav V and Queen Victoria, including the lobby, whose walls are covered with Dutch hand-painted tiles. The breakfast room is furnished like a South German brasserie , possibly due to Victoria's Baden origin. The royal couple used the palace as a summer residence. In 1924, the Ethiopian Crown Prince of the Race Tefari (later Emperor Haile Selassie ) stayed in Tullgarn during his European journey [4] .
