Canada's Walk of Fame is a landmark in Toronto ( Ontario , Canada ) that celebrates the achievements of prominent Canadians. On the Canadian Walk of Fame, as well as on a similar Hollywood one , a personal star mounted on the sidewalk is dedicated to each person awarded. Noted merits relate to one of five areas: sport; philanthropy and humanitarian activities; art and entertainment industry; entrepreneurship; science and technology ^[1] .

History

The charity of the same name began its activities in 1998. Its founders were Bill Ballard, Dusty Kol, Peter Sumalias, Dianna Schwalm and Gary Slate ^[2] . According to its charter, at least ten years of activity in the field in which they are nominated are mandatory for nominees. Their work should be a significant contribution to the Canadian or international cultural heritage ^[3] . It was decided to abandon the initial condition by which the nominee should be a native of Canada by 2004, when one of the winners was Hollywood film producer Louis Mayer , who grew up in St. John (New Brunswick) but was born in Minsk ^[4] .

In the first 20 years of its existence, Canada’s Walk of Fame was located in Toronto’s entertainment district, on Simco Street and in western King Street ^[3] . In the late 2010s, as part of a project to turn neighboring John Street into a pedestrian "cultural corridor", a proposal was made to transfer the stars of the Walk of Fame to it. It would also allow the alley to attract more attention from tourists and other visitors to the theater district ^[5] . The award ceremony has been broadcast live by the Global channel ^[6] for more than 10 years, and before that, for several years a similar broadcast was carried out by the CTV channel ^[7] .
