Biography and career
Rhodes, nee Leah Margaret Montgomery, was born in Port Arthur , Texas . In her youth, Rhodes worked as a signage and window designer in Port Arthur and San Antonio . On May 4, 1921, she married auto mechanic Russell Spurgeon Rhodes. Five years later, the couple moved to the San Fernando Valley , where Russell ran a car dealership. [1] In 1937, they divorced, and on January 9, 1943, Rhodes married James Gleish, whom she remained married until his death on June 19, 1977.
After moving to California , Rhodes began working as a buyer of Warner Brothers. In the end, she became the main assistant to Orry-Kelly . When Orry-Kelly enlisted in the army, Rhodes took over Bett Davis’s wardrobe for Old " [1] .
Rhodes got more attention after working on Deep Sleep in 1946. This led to films such as Key Largo (1948), The Adventures of Don Giovanni (1949) (for which she won the Academy Award for Costume Design ), White Hot (1949) and Strangers on the train ”(1951). Her last film was Howard Hawks 's Rio Lobo Western in 1970.
