Biography
The son of a participant in the Philippine revolution . He graduated from the Higher Normal Teacher School. Teacher by education. He continued his education, studying law at the Academy of Law (Academia de la Jurisprudencia), then at Escuela Derecho de Manila (now the College of Law of Manila), in 1912 he received a bachelor's degree in art.
In late 1900, Santos created his own newspaper , Ang Kaliwanagan .
Since 1903, he constantly collaborated in the Muling Pagsilang newspaper (Renaissance), then began to engage in trade union activity. He was elected Chairman of the Union of Workers of the Philippines ( Unión del Trabajo de Filipinas ).
Member of the Nationalist Party. He actively participated in the political and state life of the country: he held the posts of governor of the province of Risal (1910), Nueva Viskaya (1918-1920) and Senator of the Philippines (1919-1922). Since 1941, he headed the Philippine Language Commission, the regulatory body of the Philippine language, which was entrusted with the task of developing, maintaining and promoting various local Filipino languages.
Creativity
He made his debut as a prose writer in 1901. L. Santos is the author of novels that continued to be published in periodicals (Unhappy Love, 1901–1902; Ray and Dawn, 1906; Not from God, 1912; Respect, 1927; Jealous, 1931 ). Most famous for his socialist novel "Banaag at Sikat" (1906).
In 1940, Santos published the first Filipino grammar, Balarila ng Wikang Pambansa.
In the early 1960s, due to complications, he underwent surgery on the liver . He died on May 1, 1963.
In 1971 (posthumously) he was awarded the prestigious Republican Prize of Cultural Heritage in the field of literature.
