The Danish Amtas were the former metropolises of Denmark, which were used mainly for administrative districts, each district had its own council with substantial powers. Initially, there were 24 amtas, but in 1970 their number dropped to about 14 — the number fluctuated slightly over the next 3 decades. In 2006, there were 30 traditional amtas, as well as 3 municipalities with district status (Bornholm Island, which was the amtom from 1660 to 2002, became a commune, but not for long, from 2003 to 2006). On January 1, 2007, the amtas were abolished and replaced by 5 larger regions, which are not municipalities.
Amt Copenhagen includes all the municipalities of the capital of Copenhagen, with the exception of the municipality of Copenhagen and the municipality of Frederiksberg , which, because of their particular location outside of any of the traditional districts, have “district status”. Since January 1, 2007, these two municipalities have lost their special status. Greenland and the Faroe Islands are also part of Denmark , but have internal autonomy. Both are largely self-governing, and each community sends two members to the Danish parliament. The Faroe Islands received the status of self-government in 1948 ; from 1816 to 1948 the islands were danish amtas
Reform
In 2004, the government proposed a law that abolished amtas and replaced them with five major regions whose main responsibilities are health care: two regions in Jutland , two in Zealand and one region that covers Funen and the southernmost part of Jutland. The bill also demanded that the municipalities unite, that is, their number reduced from 271 to 98, with a minimum of 20,000 inhabitants in each municipality, although exceptions were made to this rule. Since 2007, less than 30,000 people live in 25 municipalities, an average of 55,500 people per municipality. Only Great Britain and Ireland have more densely populated formations at the lowest political and administrative level. The reform was approved by the Danish Parliament on February 24, 2005, and the amtas were liquidated on January 1, 2007.
