Lithuanians in the UK include persons born in Lithuania who migrated to the UK , as well as their descendants born in the UK . According to the 2011 UK census, the number of Lithuanians was 95730 in England , 1353 in Wales [1] , 4287 in Scotland [2] , 7341 in Northern Ireland [3] . The previous census of 2001 registered 4363 Lithuanians [4] . In 2013, the National Statistical Service of Great Britain estimated the number of immigrants from Lithuania at 144 thousand people [5] .
A significant number of Lithuanians arrived in Great Britain after Lithuania joined the European Union in 2004 [6] , however, from the beginning of the 20th century , Lithuanian communities already existed in Great Britain, especially in Glasgow and London [7] [8] . In Scotland, the first Lithuanians appeared at the end of the XIX century . [9] In the period from 1886 to 1914, every fourth Lithuanian emigrated from Lithuania, and most of them left in the 1890s - 1900s [7] . Some of these emigrants declined to be drafted into the Russian army , some fought for the independence of Lithuania, others were Jews who avoided persecution, and some migrants fled from poverty [10] . The Lithuanian population of Scotland is estimated to have grown from a few hundred to 7,000 in those years. About 2,000 Lithuanians settled in other parts of Great Britain during this period. About 15,000 Lithuanians also temporarily resided in Scotland, and then migrated to other countries, mainly in the United States . [7] According to the BBC , some migrated to Scotland because they could not afford a trip to the United States, while others became victims of fraud [10] .
