Biography

Born in 1290 in Valladolid . The fourth son of Sancho IV (1258–1295), King of Castile and Leon (1284–1295), and Maria de Molina (1265–1321). On his paternal side, he was the grandson of King Castile Alfonso X and Queen Violanta of Aragon (daughter of King Jaime I of Aragon ), and on the maternal side - Infanta Alfonso de Molina , son of King Leon Alfonso IX , and his wife, Major Alfonso de Meneses .

In 1311, the infante Pedro married Maria of Aragon (1299–1347), the daughter of King Aragon of Jaime II and his second wife, Blanca of Anjou . Their only child, Blanca (1319–1375), was born after the death of Pedro. At the age of 10, she was married to a five-year-old Portuguese infante Pedro, but eight years later the marriage was annulled.

In the years 1310 - 1311, Infant Pedro held the post of mayordom with his older brother, King of Castile Ferdinand IV . In 1312, after the death of Ferdinand IV, his only son, Alfonso XI the Fair (1311–1350), who was then one year old, entered the royal throne. Immediately began the struggle for control in the kingdom. The right to rule the country for a minor king was disputed by several of his relatives. In 1313, an agreement was concluded in Palazuelos , as a result of which infante Pedro (brother of King Ferdinand IV ), infante Juan de Tarifa (brother of King Sancho IV ), and Alfonso's mother, Constance of Portugal, and grandmother, Maria de Molina, were appointed regents of the kingdom. , widow of King Sancho IV . Constance, mother of Alfonso XI, died in 1313 . The main among the regents was Maria de Molina . In 1315, the Cortes in Burgos confirmed the composition of the regency council. During disputes over the regency in 1312–1315, which often ceased to be open conflicts, Pedro supported his mother Maria de Molina and often clashed with Uncle Juan de Tarifa .

In 1316, the infantry Pedro of Castile led a military expedition against the Emirate of Granada . According to Christian sources, he won a great victory on the battlefield, but could not storm two castles. Muslim sources do not mention this victory. In 1317, Infant Pedro re-launched a military campaign against Granada, lifted the siege of Gibraltar and captured the castle of Belmes de la Moraleda . In 1319, having received approval from the pope for a crusade against Granada, the Infants Pedro and Juan jointly led the expedition and besieged the fortress of Tiscar. They divided the Castilian army and were ambushed by Muslims. On June 25, 1319, the Infants and Regents Pedro and Juan of Castile suffered a crushing defeat from the Muslims, known as the disaster of Vega de Granada (or the battle of Sierra Elvir).
