Biography
Born on May 8, 1927 in the German colony Yelenendorf , located in the valley of the Azerbaijani Ganja River. He studied at the Khanlar Children's Art School. Before the war, he managed to finish two courses of the Baku Art School. In 1941, his entire family for German descent was deposited in Kazakhstan. In Karaganda, Günther was mobilized into the labor army, where, under inhuman conditions, he worked for several years at one of the mines in Karaganda. After the war, Hummel got a job as a club manager at one of the mines. Wishing to continue his special education in Moscow, he was refused for membership in the "German contingent". In KazIZO, performing sculptural works, Hummel himself seriously began to work on improving his professionalism. He created a number of monuments and portraits in Karaganda. Already in 1947, the artist received a second prize for the bust of Dzhambul, and in 1958 - joined the Union of Artists of the USSR. He was awarded the diploma of the Department of Culture and the Executive Committee of the Karaganda City Council of Deputies for the fragment “Steelworkers” from the high relief “Metallurgists”. Together with A. Bilyk - author of the monument to Nurken Abdirov. It was the first major monument in Karaganda. The largest work of the artist (in collaboration with the Moscow sculpture of N. Lavinsky ) was a granite monument to V. I. Lenin on the square named after the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution in Karaganda (1967-1975). Nowadays, the monument has been moved to the area of the Lenin cinema. The sculptor’s hand owns the monument to Appak Baizhanov, the shepherd boy, the discoverer of the coal deposit in Karaganda. In 1991, the artist with his family went to Germany for permanent residence.

My way of life
Yelenendorf is a German colony in Transcaucasia, Azerbaijan located in the valley of the Ganja River. Magnificent nature with a mild climate, one of the most prosperous in the economic and cultural relations of the colonies in Russia. It was my homeland. The name of the settlement was given in 1818 by grateful colonists in honor of the sister of Tsar Alexander I - Helen . After the October Revolution, the settlement was renamed Elenino, and in 1930 it was given the name of the Azerbaijani revolutionary - Khanlar. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was again renamed Goygol , after the name of the lake in the mountains of the small Caucasus Mountains. Above the lake stands Käppes Rock, which, as a mysterious symbol, is visible from all directions. Since the beginning of the Second World War, after our deportation to Siberia and Kazakhstan, the inhabitants of this city got everything they had acquired and built by our hardworking ancestors for their own use. Currently, by decision of the local authorities, the former Elenendorf (old town) has been declared an open-air museum telling about the history of the settlement. Restored Johannis Kirche, used in the Soviet era as a gym. With the help of donations from former colonists and their heirs living in Germany, the bells and tower clocks were restored, houses and streets were repaired. It is planned to restore the museum of local lore, founded by my uncle Jacob Hummel, a famous archaeologist and teacher. But the most incredible thing is that Dolinnaya Street was renamed to Hummel Street in honor of the theologian and historian Theodor Hummel, the founder of the settlement, the Hummel Brothers winemakers, and last but not least the archaeologist and teacher Yakov Hummel. Our countrymen, visiting the former homeland, are surprised at the order and safety of old houses. This is obviously the only settlement of German colonists in the former USSR where the historical heritage is so carefully preserved. My life was made up of difficult and successful cases, and was also subject to the influence of kind and unkind people. Despite the repression and discrimination that my fellow tribesmen and I were subjected to, I experienced fabulous bottoms and heights, difficulties and successes. With gratitude, I remember those who participated in the formation of my destiny. First of all, I am grateful to my family, which, despite all the difficulties associated with my work in art, has always supported me. Looking back at what I’ve lived through, I have to admit that my fellow tribesmen and I had to go through the most difficult and humiliating time spent in the labor army, camp behind barbed wire and 12 hours of work in the mine 41/51 of Karaganda. But later it was necessary to overcome prejudice and artificially created barriers like a German in the USSR. And at the same time, I was a lucky lucky man due to the foundations of musical literacy, playing the violin and visual arts received in childhood, which helped me through hard times and achieve my dream of becoming a professional artist. I worked in the union of artists, the art fund under the contracts of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR and Kazakhstan, creating significant works of art and monuments, gaining recognition. In Germany, I take the opportunity to work freely and independently creatively, working out what we have experienced in drawings, trying to understand the problems of our time. I participate in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad. So in short about yourself. Estimates of my life and work you can read in the articles posted in the book, written by art historians and journalists.
