Representatives of the genus are found exclusively in South America . Seven species (according to other sources nine [1] [2] ) are endemic to the Galapagos Islands [3] [4] . Another 12 inhabit the area of rain shadow in coastal deserts in the west of South America, and their area is a narrow strip with a length of 5000 km [2] .
The scientific name of the genus consists of other Greek. micro- - "small" and lophus - "crest" [5] . In Spanish and English sources, the terms lagartijas de lava and lava lizards are used (translated from Spanish and English - “lava lizards”) [4] [2] [6] . This name is due to the fact that representatives of the genus Microlophus (in particular, belonging to the species common in the Galapagos Islands) can often be seen basking on the surface of a frozen lava [7] .
