Description

Body length up to 7 cm. The body is elongated, low, compressed laterally. The dorsal fin, in which no more than 19 branched rays, with a noticeable notch between the front and rear parts, collides with the caudal fin. On the front of the head and back of the head there are often several tentacles. The tentacles between the eyes in the form of long lobes, which almost reach the beginning of the dorsal fin, have up to 7 finger-shaped processes and are thinned to the apex. Behind the anterior nostrils there is a long lobe that reaches the posterior nostrils and branches in the upper part by 2-3 processes. The lateral line to the bend is solid, further represented by short segments. On the upper jaw 29-34, and on the lower 28-30 teeth, the last tooth of both jaws is enlarged. The general coloring background is chocolate brown. On the back and sides there are small dark spots that sometimes merge into stripes. At the base of the dorsal fin, up to 7 whitish or yellowish spots; at the base of the caudal fin, a dark brown spot. Dark spots occur on the partitions of the front of the dorsal fin, on the front of the trunk and on the back of the head. During reproduction, the color of males is brighter, and they appear to have extensions at the ends of the rays of the anterior part of the anal fin [3] .

Range

Distribution of the species: Mediterranean , Marmara , Black Sea [3] .

Biology

Sea bottom residential fish of coastal areas with a rocky bottom. It keeps in small groups among rocks and large stones at depths up to 5-6 m. Reproduction, apparently, in June-August at a water temperature of 18-25 ° C. Males for breeding build “nests” in crevices, caves and cavities, among stones, etc., in shallow water at a depth of 0.5-1 m [3] . Look after the females by swaying the front of their body. Several females spawn with one male. In one nest 2-3 clutch of eggs was noted, in each of which there were 200-300 eggs. The male actively protects the nest. At a water temperature of 20-22 ° C, the larvae emerge from the eggs 9 days after fertilization. It feeds on organisms of bottom fouling [3] .
