Kyoto School

The Kyoto school is a trend in Japanese philosophy close to existentialism , the founder of which is Nishida Kitaro . The school got its name from the University of Kyoto . Acquaintance with Western philosophy aroused interest from the local spiritual and religious tradition, expressed in the form of Zen Buddhism . The student of Kitaro Nishitani Keiji deepens the ideas of non-being ( ku , 空 or mu ) and self-creation of a person from it ( ningen , 人間). In the idea of nothingness, Heidegger’s nothing and the emptiness of Buddhism are combined. Another student of Kitaro was Tanabe Hajime.

A person in a Kyoto school is understood as a social individual ( shakaiteki jiko , 社会 的 自己), created in the process of dialogue ( aydagara ) with another ( nanji , 汝). The place of this dialogue is the Basho space (場所). Thus, the Kyoto school was free from individualism and subjectivity, affirming the primacy of space and society in relation to the individual. Even the natural and social conditions, climate ( fudo , 風土) affect the formation of man. In this case, conditioning by external forces is not observed, since spontaneity ( mizukara , 自 ら) plays a large role. It is in the process of complex interaction that the self-awakening of the personality occurs ( jikaku , 自 覚).
