Geography
The surface area of the lake is approximately 2700 km², the water edge is at around 1,460 meters above sea level . The lake basin is located in the rift valley, which is gradually expanding, causing volcanic activity in the region and deepening the lake, the maximum depth of which is 480 meters ( 16th place in depth in the world). The lake is surrounded by mountains.
On the lake is one of the largest freshwater islands in the world - Ijvi ( Democratic Republic of the Congo ).
In 1948, there was an eruption of the volcano Kituro located near the lake. The lake boiled, and the fish that inhabited it boiled. Local residents gladly ate boiled fish, taking it out of the lake [1] .
Fauna
There are barbs in the lake.
Danger
It differs from the rest of the lakes by the presence of layers of carbon dioxide and 55 billion cubic meters of methane at the bottom. This is very dangerous, as the slightest earthquake or volcanic activity can lead to an explosion. Therefore, two million people from nearby territories are in constant fear of dying from a methane explosion or from asphyxiation with carbon dioxide [2] .
