Strain :Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3
International scientific name

Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3

The introduction of strain ME-3 into the human body can have an antibacterial effect on certain microorganisms in the digestive canal and an antioxidant effect on certain free radicals .

Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 inhibits a number of gram-negative bacteria and, to some extent, intestinal enterococci and the spread of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus .

ME-3 does not affect the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and, based on experiments, does not stop the infection of Helicobacter pylori .

In addition to the digestive organs , ME-3 also affects the circulatory system , reducing the amount of oxidized low-density lipoproteins (oxLDL) in the blood and, thus, reduces the risk of developing atherosclerotic vascular changes .

Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 releases nitric oxide , which is considered antimicrobial. ME-3 stores significant amounts of lactic acid and ethanol .

The safety of Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 was tested on NIH mice .

In in vivo experiments with mice, the introduced ME-3 increased the levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in the intestinal and liver tissues, which indicates the immunomodulatory effect of ME-3.

Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 was discovered in 1995 in the intestines of a healthy one-year-old child of Tartu by scientists from the University of Tartu under the leadership of Marika Mikelsaar and Mihkel Zilmer .
