Skiffle is a type of folk music - singing with accompaniment, combining elements of English folk verses and American Dixieland . Instrumentation certainly included a guitar, harmonica and a washboard as a rhythm instrument. The most famous (and continued to perform until the late 1990s) performer of sciffle - Lonnie Donegan . Skiffle does not require deep knowledge of music and the ability to play well on any musical instrument, hence its simplicity and popularity.

Skiffle was first widely distributed in the United States in the 1900s, and then became popular in the UK in the 1950s. John Lennon's first group, The Quarrymen , was a sciffle group. Later in the genre worked Mungo Jerry.
