Evgenia Borisovna Paton (March 12, 1956 , Kiev - December 23, 2009 , Kiev ) is a Soviet and Ukrainian scientist in the field of genetic engineering and plant biotechnology . Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , Doctor of Biological Sciences , Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (2006). Daughter of the President of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Boris Paton .

Scientific Heritage
The studies of E.B. Paton laid the foundation for obtaining detailed information in the field of structural foundations of protein-nucleic acid interactions and their role in the regulation of gene expression, which is one of the key issues in molecular biology. She proposed a comprehensive innovative approach to assessing the interaction of RNA protein, which is based on the determination of the structural elements of the protein (L10) and nucleic components (mRNA, rRNA), which provide the possibility of the formation of these components of the complex. Evgenia Borisovna’s studies made it possible for the first time to detect in prokaryotes the available alternative types of structural organization of mRNA binding strands of the L10 protein, despite the uniform structure type of the corresponding rRNA target sites. The species specificity of regulation of gene expression by the interaction of L10 protein with mRNA in each of the specific representatives of prokaryotes was established for the first time, which is ensured by the presence of additional conservative structural elements in its mRNA and rRNA targets. The discovery of this phenomenon is key to the development of new highly effective antibiotics. Another extremely important practical aspect of the application of the data obtained by E. B. Paton is the study of the role of the structural organization of rRNA target sites of the L10 protein and the interaction of the L10 protein with rRNA in the occurrence of autoimmune diseases.
Evgenia Borisovna worked in the field of plant biotechnology, headed the laboratory of genetic engineering at the Institute of Cell Biology and Genetic Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine. E.B. Paton is the author of over 100 scientific papers. The high scientific level of her research is recognized abroad. Confirmation of this is the award of grants from the Medical Research Council of Canada (1991), the European Organization for Molecular Biology (1992), the International Science Foundation (1995-1996), CRDF (1996). The researcher has repeatedly trained in leading scientific institutions in Canada, the Netherlands, and Germany.
Evgenia Borisovna was actively involved in scientific and organizational activities, was a member of specialized councils for the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations at the institutes of molecular biology and genetics, cell biology and genetic engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the expert council of the Higher Attestation Commission of Ukraine, and a member of the editorial board of the journal Biopolymers and Cell.
