Biography

Born in 1832 in Yuryevets of the Kostroma province , in the family of a college assessor [1] , who later served the hereditary nobility . He graduated from the Kostroma Gymnasium , and in 1852 - the law and physical and mathematical faculties of the Imperial St. Petersburg University .

He served in the Ministry of Education : in 1853 he was appointed teacher of natural history at the Mogilev gymnasium ; in 1862 he became an inspector of the gymnasium; then he was appointed director of the Vitebsk gymnasium ; in 1867-1872 he was the director of the schools of the Mogilev province and the Mogilev gymnasium; Since 1875 - Director of the Kursk Real College. In 1876 he received the post of director of the Mountain-Goretsky Agricultural School and remained in it until the end of his life [2] . In April 1878 he was promoted to the rank of State Councilor [3] .

He was awarded the orders: St. Stanislav of the 2nd degree with the imperial crown (1870), St. Anne of the 2nd art. (1871) [3] .

In 1899, due to illness, he retired and left for treatment in Wiesbaden, where on the night of May 17 he died of a brain hemorrhage .

In 1870, N. M. Arnold became a corresponding member of the Russian Entomological Society . Having lived in the Mogilev province for more than 40 years, Arnold thoroughly studied the insect fauna of the region and compiled the “Catalog of insects of the Mogilev province”, which was published after his death in 1901 [2] [4] .

Family

Wife: Olga Nikolaevna, nee Sokolovskaya. They have seven children, including Ivan Nikolaevich Arnold (1868-1942) - an ichthyologist scientist, professor at Leningrad State University . Grandson, Vladimir Ivanovich Arnold (1896-1942) - glaciologist, was one of the consultants in the construction of the Road of Life in Leningrad. Ivan Nikolaevich, his wife and their only son Vladimir Ivanovich died of starvation during the siege of Leningrad.
